EUROPEAN CHRONICLES

Everyone comes from somewhere! The Trans Musicales are no different! Yet having an anchor point doesn’t stop them from seeking
difference and diversity and from being curious and interested in
other faraway places. In 1979, the Trans' line-up was exclusively from Rennes. In 1981 bands from all over Europe started gigging in the Trans, and as soon as 1982 a whole evening was dedicated exclusively to the Belgian label Crammed Discs. Arno, lead vocalist of the Belgian band TC Matic, got the crowd singing along to the chorus of a rock version of an ode to joy:
"Putain putain
C’est vachement bien
On est quand même tous des européens" (d*** it, it’s great we are
all Europeans)
Since then, the festival's artistic direction is all about showing the
vitality of European creations in contemporary music.
Hosting the European Cultural Season during the French Presidency of the European Union has unleashed a stream of memories. The celebration of the 30th edition of the Trans Musicales makes the obviousness of this rendez vous even more thrilling.
The historical and geographical affiliations between "Europe" and
"Festival" make it possible to bring together these two worlds of imagination and investigation. We wilfully chose to deviate from the
usual framework of the festival to go on an exploration of the contemporary musical scenes of Europe.

For the first time, the European Chronicles, a thread running through the entire festival, will propose a European version of some of the Trans Musicales' projects :

CONCERTS IN THE UBU
European artists have a place of choice in the international line-up of the Trans: as usual they are present in the various halls and venues of the festival. However, this year the Ubu in Rennes is exclusively dedicated to Europe's emerging talents.

AT THE PARCHEMINERIE THEATRE AND THE ALL NEW GAUMONT MOVIE THEATRE
In parallel to the concerts and completing them, an historical voyage through the world of music featuring some of its main protagonists is programmed: full length films, short films, documentaries and video art. This journey starts on Friday 28 November at the Parcheminerie theatre, and on Wednesday 3 December at the Gaumont movie theatre, near the Trans's Village.

THE CONFERENCES OF « LE JEU DE L’OUIE » AT THE CHAMPS LIBRES
If the birth of rock music is attributed to America, cradle of contemporary musical genres, it is clear that Europe took this music, made it creatively its own and completely transfigured it. We will therefore try to put some perspective on this unnoticed part of our history.

CULTURE IN TRANS PROJECTS
European Chronicles opens up the "Culture in Trans" project to young Europeans recently arrived in Rennes Métropole (students from the Erasmus exchange programme, European volunteers…). The CRIJ (Regional Youth Information Centre) coordinator of this project will assign two young Europeans to each structure.

With a fortuitous coincidence of the timetable, the European Chronicles will almost conclude the European Cultural Season
during the French Presidency of the European Union.
